In its simplest and most common usage, a fetish is an erotic fascination from something which may not, on the surface, seem erotic to other people. The clearest example would be a foot fetish: millions of men and women are aroused by feet and legs (from toes and insteps to calves and thighs), and many millions more by types of footwear (not just high heels, but boots, sandals, sneakers, pumps, and dozens of other styles). People may have fetishes for literally any object or any part of another person's body. The variety of fetishes is virtually limitless and so are the degrees. At one extreme are fetishists who cannot achieve orgasm unless their fetish object is present. At the other are the vast majority of adults who may enjoy the smell of leather or get turned on if their partner dons sexy footwear, or lingerie or something made of rubber, but who could just as easily do without the extra stimulation. Most self-avowed fetishists fall in the middle of the range: their fetish profoundly heightens their pleasure but they can climax even when it does not play a role in the encounter.
